Simeone speaks frankly about Alvarez's future, Barcelona cannot sit still

Julián Álvarez is becoming the focal point at Atletico Madrid as the Argentine forward's future is cast into doubt after approaches from Barcelona and Real Madrid. Nevertheless, manager Diego Simeone has recently made his position clear, disclosing the unique position he wants for this striker.

Coach Diego Simeone has just spoken about the future of Julián Álvarez, amid the Argentine striker becoming a hot topic in the summer transfer market. Barcelona has publicly shown interest, while Real Madrid once made a €150 million offer for this forward.

Atletico Madrid will kick off their La Liga campaign with a home match against Málaga at the Metropolitano on Wednesday. However, Álvarez will not be available as he returned late to training after participating in the World Cup final with Argentina. Despite growing speculation about his future, Simeone has delivered a significant message regarding Atletico's plans for this striker.

CEO Miguel Ángel Gil Marín previously stated that Álvarez is not a player for sale. When asked about the club's stance, Simeone replied: “I think if the club owner [Gil Marín] has spoken so decisively, then everything is clear. Completely clear. There is nothing more to add.” The Argentine coach said Atletico is now focused on helping Álvarez regain his fitness.

According to ESPN, Simeone and Álvarez had a direct conversation last week. The 26-year-old forward is said to have once again expressed his desire to leave, but Simeone emphasized that if this player continues to stay at Atletico, he will still play a key role in the squad. “I only focus on the professional aspect,” Simeone affirmed.

Furthermore, Simeone indicated that Atletico is building plans around Álvarez. “[Julian] is a fantastic guy. We talked, as we usually do... We need more training sessions with him. He is the best attacking player we have. I have said that and I still think so. I want to build a team around him.”

When asked whether Álvarez should apologize to Atletico fans for publicly expressing his desire to transfer during the World Cup, Simeone refrained from passing judgment. “Everyone will have their own opinions. I always respect people's opinions, especially in situations like this. Before it was Diego Costa, [Antoine] Griezmann, and now it's Julián.”

Alongside the Álvarez story, Simeone also praised new signing Cristian Romero, who recently moved from Tottenham. “He will bring leadership, strength, quality, experience, and dedication. I see in him a player who embodies the values of Atletico Madrid, and he is here to help us.”
